Our Chiropractic Care
The world health organisation defines Chiropractic as a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.
Chiropractic is concerned with the reconnection and restoration of optimal spinal function and general health that is coordinated by the nervous system in response to the internal and external environments it is exposed to on a daily basis.
Chiropractors are fully regulated primary healthcare professionals. Their role is to locate and gently release the interferences to the nervous system allowing the body to function at its full potential. Chiropractic care works to decrease pain, improves functionality and biomechanics of the spine. It also increases the sensory signal to the brain, so the body is functioning at a more efficient level. Chiropractic allows patients to be healthy and well so they can do the things they want to do without having to be in pain or discomfort. At Chiropractic Wellness Centre, our focus is to find the root causes, the why behind what is wrong with you.
An Introduction to Chiropractic Care
At Chiropractic Wellness Centre, our focus is to find the root causes, the why behind what is wrong with you. Once found, our focus is restoring your body to normal, healthy modes of operation.
We Take Care of You
Your First Visit
You will be required to fill out a health questionnaire on you 1st visit. It is suggested that you arrive about 10minutes earlier to allow you time to fill this questionnaire.
Please remember to bring reading glasses along should you need them. Your first visit to the practice will consist of an initial chiropractic consultation which is to gather more information about your current health problems and general background of your health history. In relevant cases, nutrition will also be addressed. If appropriate, a full examination will be carried out.
A thorough spinal health and functional examination will be carried out which will include the spine, relevant joints, muscles, ligaments and the nervous system.
For this, we will ask you to wear a gown that allows us to conduct the examination professionally. Your examination will typically last 45-60 minutes and provides us with the information about your spinal health in order to complete a report for you.
Once you have completed the examination, the Chiropractor will sit down with you, explain the findings and your individual care plan. This will include what is wrong, why it has become dysfunctional, how Chiropractic care will help you back to health, the frequency of care and the costs involved. Provided no further examination is required and you are happy to proceed with care, you will receive your first Chiropractic adjustment.
Regular Visits
Follow up adjustments are usually 10-15minutes/session. During each visit you will be assessed for functionality and be adjusted accordingly. You will also receive home exercises and lifestyle advice during these sessions.
We always recommend that you help yourself to plenty of water and take a short walk after each adjustment and when required use an ice pack for approximately 10-15minutes as recommended by the Chiropractor.
How do we help Restore Spinal Health
A thorough Chiropractic examination will look at how your spine is currently functioning and using these findings we will create a plan to help resolve any noted dysfunction and imbalances. A safe, gentle, hands-on, dynamic integration process is used to re-boot, reconnect and restore proper function. Traditional chiropractic instruments and/or adjustments are also used, but they are used in a very precise manner to stimulate function in the affected part of the brain. In addition, functional rehabilitation exercises and activities may also be given. If there are other related health issues related to overload of the sympathetic nervous system (from emotional/ chemical stresses) we may then recommend the Functional Formula to address some of these stresses.

How do we help Restore Spinal Health
Chiropractic care is like building a house – certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly.
When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem.
The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully.
There are three general phases of chiropractic care:
Phase 1: Acute/Relief Care
This is what happens immediately after the injury to about 72 hours after the injury. It is the inflammatory response that causes pain, swelling, redness and warmth around the injured area.
If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care two to three times per week for four to six weeks.
Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care
This is when the inflammation has gone down and your body begins to repair the injured area. The body lays down “type 3 collagen” which is weaker than normal collagen. It easily stretches and tears. This process last from 72 hours to six weeks after the injury.
During the corrective care phase, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, thereby helping prevent injury. It is typical to need care 2-4x for a month, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.
Phase 3: Remodelling/Wellness Care
The collagen is similar to sticky glue at first. Your body moulds it along lines of stress. That way, it perform the functional capabilities of the tissue it is replacing. This phase is largely one of an improvement in the quality, orientation and tensile strength of the collagen.
This phase lasts from 3 month to 12 months (some research is showing up to 2 years). The Remodelling Phase is the complete restoration of healthy function to the injured area, and may take as long as 3-12 months after your injury. Connective tissue heals over time. Don’t be fooled into thinking you are healed just because you no longer have pain.
Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor once every 2-3months, based on your lifestyle and goals.
Every treatment protocol is dependent on each person’s individual needs. We always consider what’s going on in their bodies and what stresses and damages have been done over the years. It’s never a one-size-fits-all approach to care. We often modify treatment where necessary to best benefit the patient.
What does a Chiropractic Adjustment feel like?
If you’ve never been to a chiropractor you may wonder what an adjustment feels like. We want you to feel at ease and know that the adjustment is just a gentle movement of the spine.
You may hear a popping sound that is simply the gas that develops between the joints. It’s the same thing as when you would crack your knuckles. Adjustments are usually painless. Check out our video on Joint Popping to have a better understanding.
We also encourage patients to relax. Your chiropractor will be very gentle and will see how your body responds to the adjustment. It’s our aim to give patients information so they can make educated choices about their health and what works for them.
